Nerve zapper may offer relief for MS-related bladder, bowel, and sexual issues — trial puts it to the test
NCT ID NCT05380856
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a device called sacral neuromodulation (InterStim X) can improve bladder, bowel, and sexual function in people with multiple sclerosis who have not responded to standard treatments. Participants who show at least 50% improvement during a test period will have the device implanted and then be randomly assigned to have it turned on or off for four months. The goal is to see if the active stimulation leads to better bladder control, fewer leaks, and improved quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- sacral neuromodulation (InterStim X system) — a device that sends mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves to improve bladder, bowel, and sexual function
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a new, non-drug option for managing bladder, bowel, and sexual problems in people with multiple sclerosis.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants. The placebo-controlled design means some may not benefit, and device implantation carries surgical risks.
