Blood test may spare kids from unnecessary radiation after head injury

NCT ID NCT02819778

First seen Apr 22, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study looked at whether measuring a protein called S100B in the blood can help doctors decide if a child with a mild head injury really needs a CT scan. CT scans use radiation, which can slightly increase the risk of brain tumors in children. The study involved over 2,200 children and compared standard care to care guided by the S100B blood test, aiming to safely reduce the number of CT scans.
