Texts and brain zaps: new combo for tough depression?

NCT ID NCT05570344

First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding a supportive text-messaging program (Text4Support) to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) improves depression symptoms more than rTMS alone. About 200 adults with treatment-resistant depression will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The trial lasts 6 weeks of active treatment, with follow-ups at 1, 3, and 6 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and Text4Support (supportive text messages)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a more effective, low-cost way to ease depression symptoms in people who haven't responded to standard treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early pilot trial, so results may not apply widely. Adding text messages may not provide extra benefit over rTMS alone, and the study is not designed to prove long-term effectiveness.
