New hope for Drug-Resistant epilepsy? phase 2 trial launches
NCT ID NCT05518578
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new drug called SPN-817 in 60 adults whose epilepsy does not improve with standard treatments. The main goal is to see if the drug is safe and tolerable. Researchers will also track whether it reduces the number of motor seizures. Participants take the drug as an oral capsule and keep a seizure diary.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SPN-817 (extended-release huperzine A)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new option for people with epilepsy that doesn't respond to current treatments, potentially reducing seizure frequency.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with only 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The main goal is safety, not proof of effectiveness, and side effects are possible.
