Can a smartphone and pedometer help people get fitter before bariatric surgery?
NCT ID NCT03963986
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial investigates whether a remote digital support program, including a connected pedometer and online coaching, can help people aged 30–50 who are scheduled for bariatric surgery become more physically active in the months before their operation. Participants use a digital platform and receive motivational interviews by phone or video. The study compares their activity levels to those who do not use the digital tool, measuring changes at 4, 10, and 16 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
digital platform with connected pedometer and remote coaching
What this could lead to
If effective, this approach could help people awaiting bariatric surgery safely increase physical activity, potentially improving surgical outcomes and long-term health.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (73 participants) focused on short-term activity levels, not on weight loss or surgical complications. The digital tool may not work for everyone, and results may not apply to broader populations.
