Study finds way to cut unneeded meds in mental health patients
NCT ID NCT07043803
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a program to reduce anticholinergic medications (like benztropine) in 53 adults with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other serious mental illnesses who had been taking these drugs for at least 6 months. The goal was to safely taper or stop these medications when they were no longer needed, which may improve memory and reduce side effects. The program used a stepped-wedge design across multiple healthcare sites to guide doctors and patients in reducing these drugs.
