Could cutting back on IV fluids save lives in septic shock?
NCT ID NCT06140147
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether giving fewer non-essential fluids to adults with septic shock can improve outcomes. The trial will enroll 1,850 patients in intensive care, comparing a restrictive fluid strategy to usual care. The main goal is to see if this approach reduces deaths and serious complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
protocolized reduction of non-resuscitation fluids (intravenous fluids, enteral water, nutrition, and glucose)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could establish a safer fluid management strategy for septic shock, potentially reducing deaths and complications in intensive care.
What could go wrong
This is a large but early-stage trial without a defined phase. The intervention is a change in clinical practice, not a new drug, so benefits may be modest. There is a risk of dehydration or electrolyte imbalances if fluids are overly restricted.
