Could a simple pulpotomy replace root canals for some patients?

NCT ID NCT04922229

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two treatments for irreversible pulpitis, a condition causing severe tooth pain. The standard treatment is a root canal, but researchers want to see if a less invasive procedure called pulpotomy works just as well. The study will involve 138 people and also look for biomarkers that predict success.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pulpotomy procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a simpler, less invasive tooth-saving procedure works as well as a root canal for certain cases of severe tooth pain.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study that hasn't started yet. The pulpotomy may not be as effective long-term as the standard root canal, and results may not apply to all patients.
