Can a simpler procedure save children's aching baby teeth?

NCT ID NCT06149845

First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether a less invasive dental procedure called pulpotomy can successfully treat baby molars with a severe, painful tooth condition known as irreversible pulpitis. Instead of removing the entire nerve, pulpotomy removes only the top part and places a soothing medicine on the remaining nerve. The study will follow 120 children aged 4 to 9 for up to two years to see if the treated teeth remain pain-free and healthy, and whether the procedure provides quick pain relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Full pulpotomy procedure
What this could lead to
If successful, this could support a simpler, quicker, and less stressful alternative to full root canal treatment for children's baby teeth, potentially preserving natural teeth and reducing discomfort.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial, and success depends on careful patient selection and technique. There is a risk that the procedure may not fully resolve pain or infection, potentially requiring further treatment.
