Jail-Based PTSD therapy could curb overdose deaths after release

NCT ID NCT07490717

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether offering PTSD therapy to people in jail who also have opioid or stimulant use disorder can help them start addiction treatment after release. Researchers will screen and refer participants, then randomly assign some to start therapy immediately in jail and others after release. The goal is to see if treating trauma improves engagement with substance use treatment and reduces overdose risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Written Exposure Therapy (WET)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that treating PTSD in jail helps people with addiction start and stay in substance use treatment after release, reducing overdose deaths.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial testing a new care pathway, not a proven treatment. Results may not apply to other jails or populations, and therapy engagement may be low.
