Magic Mushroom-Like drug tested for depression and anxiety
NCT ID NCT06820723
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study will give 40 adults with major depression and moderate-to-severe anxiety a single dose of CYB003 (a synthetic version of psilocin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) or a placebo. Researchers will use brain scans (fMRI, EEG) and questionnaires to see how the drug affects brain activity and symptoms. The goal is to understand how psychedelics might help, not to prove a cure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CYB003 (a synthetic version of psilocin, the active compound in magic mushrooms)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help explain how psychedelics affect the brain in depression and anxiety, pointing toward new treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (40 people) focused on brain changes, not a proven treatment. The drug may not improve symptoms or could cause side effects like hallucinations or emotional distress.
