Brief therapy aims to stop PTSD before it starts in spinal cord injury patients

NCT ID NCT05233111

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a short form of talk therapy, called brief prolonged exposure therapy, can help prevent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in people who have had a spinal cord injury. The therapy involves three one-hour sessions during inpatient rehabilitation. Researchers will compare PTSD symptoms in 200 participants who receive the therapy versus those who get standard care, tracking them for six months.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a practical, short therapy to prevent PTSD in people recovering from a spinal cord injury.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial with no blinding, so results may not be definitive. The therapy is brief and may not be enough for everyone.
