New trial aims to stop phantom limb pain before it starts
NCT ID NCT07139483
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether combining mirror therapy with a gentle brain stimulation technique (tDCS) soon after amputation can prevent phantom limb pain from becoming a long-term problem. 108 recent amputees will be split into three groups: one gets mirror therapy plus real tDCS, one gets mirror therapy plus fake tDCS, and one gets no extra treatment. The goal is to see if the combo can stop pain from sticking around.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to stop phantom limb pain from becoming chronic after amputation.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 108 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The combined therapy may not work better than mirror therapy alone.
