Paramedics test handheld ultrasound to spot heart failure in the field
NCT ID NCT07549334
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether paramedics can use a lung ultrasound to improve diagnosis of heart failure in patients with breathing trouble. About 1,000 adults with shortness of breath will receive the ultrasound during emergency care. Researchers will compare the paramedic's diagnosis with the hospital's final diagnosis to see if ultrasound helps get it right.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lung ultrasound
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that paramedics can use ultrasound to more accurately diagnose heart failure in the field, leading to better and faster treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study, so results may not apply broadly. Ultrasound training and interpretation can vary, and the test may not always improve outcomes.
