Ultrasound test may help doctors avoid giving too much fluid to sick children
NCT ID NCT05054452
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether ultrasound measurements of the heart and blood vessels can predict which mechanically ventilated children will benefit from extra fluids. Only about half of children with shock respond to fluids, and too much fluid can be harmful. The researchers used a device to measure heart function before and after a small fluid challenge, looking for signs that reliably identify responders. The study was very small (4 participants) and completed, but larger studies are needed to confirm the approach.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a reliable, non-invasive way to decide which children need IV fluids, potentially reducing harm from unnecessary fluids.
What could go wrong
This was a very small, early study (only 4 participants) and the methods need much larger testing before they can be used in routine care.
