New web tool aims to predict and prevent Crohn's disease in relatives

NCT ID NCT05332639

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing a web-based tool that estimates a person's risk of developing Crohn's disease based on their lifestyle and family history. Researchers will enroll 80 healthy people who have a parent or sibling with inflammatory bowel disease. Participants will receive personalized risk information and be followed for 6 months to see if it motivates them to make healthier choices, like improving diet or quitting smoking. The goal is to see if this approach is feasible and could help prevent Crohn's disease in those at highest risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Personalized Risk Estimation for Crohn's Disease (PRE-Crohn's) tool

What this could lead to

If successful, this tool could help identify people at high risk for Crohn's disease and guide them toward lifestyle changes that may lower their chances of developing it.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study, not a treatment trial. The tool may not change behavior or reduce risk, and results may not apply to the general population.
