Practice quitting: a new way to help smokers who Aren't ready to stop?
NCT ID NCT05513872
First seen Sep 09, 2026 · Last updated Sep 10, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Many smokers are not ready to set a quit date, so traditional cessation programs miss them. This trial tests whether counseling focused on practice quitting, where smokers try not smoking for short periods without pressure to quit forever, helps them make a real quit attempt later. Researchers also test whether giving a four-week supply of nicotine patches and lozenges encourages practice quitting. The study enrolls 780 daily smokers who are not planning to quit in the next month but are open to changing their smoking in the next six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Nicotine replacement therapy (patches and lozenges) plus practice quitting counseling
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could give smokers who are not ready to quit a low-pressure way to build skills and confidence, leading to more successful quit attempts later.
- What could go wrong
- Practice quitting may not translate into lasting abstinence, and nicotine replacement carries known side effects like skin irritation or nausea. The trial tests a behavioral approach, so results may depend on how well participants stick with the counseling.
