Post-Birth sugar check reveals hidden diabetes risk in moms

NCT ID NCT01839448

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at 500 women who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy. They took a glucose test 4 to 12 weeks after giving birth to see how many had type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, or impaired fasting glucose. The goal was to compare women diagnosed with gestational diabetes before 24 weeks of pregnancy versus those diagnosed after 24 weeks. The study does not test a treatment but aims to improve understanding of postpartum diabetes risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors better understand when to screen for diabetes after pregnancy, leading to earlier detection and prevention of type 2 diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures outcomes without testing any intervention, so it cannot directly improve health. Results may not apply to all populations.
