Could a special gel help burn patients avoid skin grafts?
NCT ID NCT04893863
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a gel called PluroGel®, used with standard dressings, can help burn injuries heal better and reduce the need for skin grafting. Twenty adults with similar burns on both arms or legs will have one limb treated with the gel and the other with standard care. The main goal is to see if the gel-treated area requires less grafting.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
PluroGel® (a gel dressing) plus moistened gauze, compared to standard topical antibiotic ointment and non-adherent gauze
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce the amount of skin grafting needed for burn injuries, leading to less scarring and fewer surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 20 people, so results may not apply broadly. The gel might not improve healing or could cause irritation.
