Plant protein power: new study tests weight loss in seniors
NCT ID NCT07429136
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adults aged 55 and older with obesity can follow a plant-based, high-protein diet while losing weight. Two hundred participants will receive dietary counseling for six months, focusing on cutting 500 calories per day and increasing protein intake. Half will aim for at least 60% of their protein from plants, the other half from animals. Researchers will measure weight loss, muscle mass, and overall health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dietary counseling for a plant-based, high-protein, calorie-restricted diet
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a plant-based high-protein diet is a feasible way for older adults to lose weight while preserving muscle mass.
What could go wrong
This is an early feasibility study, not a large trial testing long-term health outcomes. Results may not apply to all older adults, and sticking to the diet may be challenging.
