New ablation combo may keep AFib at bay longer
NCT ID NCT03057548
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding ablation of the left atrial posterior wall to standard pulmonary vein isolation reduces the return of atrial fibrillation in people with persistent AF. A total of 110 adults having their first catheter ablation took part. The goal was to see if the combined procedure leads to fewer arrhythmia episodes one year later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
catheter ablation procedure
What this could lead to
If successful, this combined ablation approach could offer a more effective way to control persistent atrial fibrillation and reduce the chance of it coming back.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial with 110 participants, so results are limited in size. The procedure carries risks like bleeding or heart complications, and the added ablation may not provide extra benefit over standard treatment.
