First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a program called PILI 'Āina that combines lifestyle lessons, home gardens, and cooking classes to help Native Hawaiians manage type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. About 210 overweight or obese Native Hawaiian adults with these conditions will take part. The goal is to see if the program improves diet quality, weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
behavioral intervention (Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle lessons plus raised-bed home garden and cooking classes)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a culturally tailored, community-based way to help Native Hawaiians better manage cardiometabolic conditions and reduce related health risks.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage behavioral study without a control group for comparison. Results may not apply broadly, and adherence to the garden and lifestyle changes may vary.
