Pig cells could free diabetics from dangerous lows in groundbreaking trial

NCT ID NCT06575426

Summary

This is the first human study testing a new treatment called OPF-310, which involves transplanting specially encapsulated insulin-producing cells from pigs into people with unstable type 1 diabetes. The goal is to see if these transplanted cells can safely help control blood sugar levels and prevent severe, dangerous low blood sugar episodes that can occur even with the best current technology. Researchers will test different doses in a small group of adults who continue to experience these life-threatening lows despite using automated insulin pumps.
