Could a light zap cure bad breath in diabetics?
NCT ID NCT07463859
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) – a light-based treatment – to standard gum cleaning can reduce bad breath (halitosis) in people with type 2 diabetes and advanced gum disease. Thirty-two participants will receive either standard care or standard care plus aPDT. The main goal is to see if aPDT improves breath odor and gum health over six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) with methylene blue
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a better way to treat bad breath and gum disease in people with diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 32 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The added benefit of light therapy over standard care may be small or none.
