Can warm fluid during labor prevent baby breathing problems?
NCT ID NCT07274527
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 31 times
Summary
The PEARL trial is testing whether infusing warm sterile fluid into the uterus during labor can reduce breathing problems in newborns when the amniotic fluid is stained with thick meconium. About 320 pregnant women at 36 weeks or later will be randomly assigned to receive either the fluid infusion or standard care. The study also checks for inflammation and brain injury markers in cord blood and follows up with families when the child is 12 months old.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
warm lactated ringer's solution infused into the uterus
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, standardized way to reduce breathing problems in newborns exposed to thick meconium during labor.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (320 participants) and earlier studies on amnioinfusion had mixed results. The procedure may not significantly improve outcomes or could cause complications.
