Hidden clots in heart failure? new study tests routine screening
NCT ID NCT07499661
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 17, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) are often missed in people hospitalized with acute heart failure. About 740 patients across multiple hospitals will take part. In half the hospitals, doctors will follow their usual approach; in the other half, they will systematically test every patient for a clot using a standard diagnostic checklist. The goal is to see if routine testing leads to more diagnoses and better outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Systematic diagnostic algorithm for pulmonary embolism (including Geneva score, D-dimer testing, and imaging)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that routine screening for blood clots in the lungs is worthwhile for all patients hospitalized with acute heart failure, leading to earlier treatment and fewer complications.
- What could go wrong
- This is a pragmatic trial testing a diagnostic strategy, not a new treatment. The expected increase in detection is modest (from 1% to 5%), and it may not translate into better survival or fewer hospital readmissions.
