Colonoscopy may detect Parkinson's before symptoms worsen

NCT ID NCT07217054

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a protein linked to Parkinson's disease can be found in colon tissue samples taken during a routine colonoscopy. Researchers will compare samples from people with Parkinson's, those with REM sleep behavior disorder, and healthy individuals. The goal is to see if this method could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple, early test for Parkinson's disease using tissue from a routine colonoscopy.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study with only 40 participants. It may not prove the test works reliably for everyone.
