Timing of pain relief after back injection may predict Long-Term success
NCT ID NCT07367191
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will follow 120 adults with sciatica from a herniated disc who receive a standard steroid injection. Researchers want to see if the speed and pattern of pain relief in the first few days and weeks can predict whether the treatment is still working at 3 and 6 months. Participants will rate their pain before the shot, one hour after, every 72 hours for 21 days, and then at 1, 3, and 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
betamethasone and bupivacaine (steroid and anesthetic injection)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict which patients will benefit most from epidural steroid injections for sciatica, improving treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a test of a new treatment. It only looks at patterns in pain relief, so it won't prove whether the injection itself works better than other options.
