Which painkiller combo works best for cancer surgery? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06731998

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares three routine pain control methods used during minimally invasive cancer surgery: a nerve block plus local anesthetic, nerve block alone, or local anesthetic alone. About 48 adults having surgery for various cancers will be randomly assigned to one of the three groups. Researchers will track pain scores, opioid use, and side effects for the first 24 hours after surgery to see which method works best.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ropivacaine (local anesthetic)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could identify the best pain management approach for cancer surgery, potentially reducing opioid use and improving recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 48 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The differences between groups might be small.
