Silent suffering: new study to track pain in ventilator patients

NCT ID NCT07182851

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how often pain occurs in intensive care unit (ICU) patients who are on mechanical ventilators (breathing machines). Researchers will observe 370 adults, using special pain scales to measure pain on the second day of ventilation and when they first wake up. They will also track breathing problems, time on the ventilator, and death rates over 28 days to see if pain is linked to worse outcomes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors better recognize and manage pain in sedated ICU patients, potentially improving recovery and reducing complications.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures pain and outcomes, so it won't directly change care. Results may not apply to all ICU settings.
