Pill vs. IV: which works faster for postpartum hypertension?

NCT ID NCT05139238

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study aimed to compare two blood pressure medications—oral nifedipine (a pill) and intravenous labetalol (given through a vein)—for treating dangerously high blood pressure in women who have just given birth. The goal was to see which drug lowers blood pressure faster. However, the trial was stopped early after only 2 participants enrolled, so no meaningful results were obtained.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

nifedipine and labetalol

What this could lead to

If it worked, this could show that a simple pill works as well as an IV drug for treating severe postpartum high blood pressure, making treatment easier and faster.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated after enrolling only 2 people, so no reliable conclusions can be drawn. It is too small to know which drug is better.
