New antibiotic mix aims to tame tough stomach bug with fewer side effects
NCT ID NCT06561711
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested different doses of the antibiotics minocycline and metronidazole, combined with bismuth and a stomach acid blocker, to treat Helicobacter pylori infections that didn't clear with previous treatments. 480 adults who had failed earlier therapy were randomly assigned to one of several 14-day regimens. The goal was to find a combination that kills the bacteria just as well as the standard treatment but causes fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- minocycline and metronidazole (antibiotics) plus vonoprazan and bismuth potassium citrate
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a more tolerable and effective antibiotic combination for people with stubborn H. pylori infections that haven't cleared with earlier treatments.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 4 trial comparing existing drugs, so no major breakthrough is expected. Side effects from the antibiotics are common, and the best regimen may still cause discomfort.
