New program aims to curb opioid overprescribing in primary care
NCT ID NCT03889418
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two ways to help primary care doctors prescribe opioids more safely for patients with chronic pain, depression, or anxiety. One approach used an electronic tool that reminded doctors about risk checks and guidelines. The other added a team of a pharmacist, a social worker, and a community health worker to provide extra support. The goal was to see which method better reduced high-dose opioid prescriptions. The trial involved 490 adults from multiple clinics in Louisiana.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
electronic medical record clinical decision support tool and collaborative care (clinical pharmacist, social worker, community health worker)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help primary care clinics reduce risky high-dose opioid prescribing and improve care for patients with chronic pain and mental health conditions.
What could go wrong
This is a completed implementation study, not a drug trial, so results may not apply to all clinics. The intervention relies on provider behavior change, which can be hard to sustain.
