Laughing gas put to the test for pain relief in small early study

NCT ID NCT01581450

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This early-phase study tested whether breathing a mixture of 35% nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can reduce pain sensitivity in 20 healthy men. Researchers used mild electrical stimulation to create temporary pain and measured changes in the area of skin that became extra sensitive. The goal was to understand how nitrous oxide affects pain processing, not to treat a disease.
