New xenon MRI could spot lung damage in kids after transplant
NCT ID NCT04391335
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a special MRI using xenon gas can better detect bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a serious lung condition, in children who have had a stem-cell transplant. Fifteen children aged 6 to 17 will undergo breathing tests and the xenon MRI. The goal is to see if this new imaging method can diagnose BOS more accurately than standard breathing tests.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
xenon gas
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a more accurate, non-invasive way to diagnose bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome early in children after stem-cell transplant.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study (15 children) focused on testing a diagnostic tool, not a treatment. The MRI with xenon gas may not prove better than current breathing tests.
