Can lung MRI replace CT scans for detecting a serious Post-Transplant lung condition?
NCT ID NCT04080232
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether lung MRI can diagnose bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) after allogeneic stem cell transplant as well as chest CT scans. BOS is a serious lung complication that can occur after transplant, and early diagnosis is important. Researchers compared MRI and CT scans in 16 adult patients to see if MRI could spot the same lung abnormalities. If MRI works well, it could provide a radiation-free option for monitoring these patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, lung MRI could offer a safer, radiation-free way to detect bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome earlier after stem cell transplant.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 16 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. MRI may not be as accurate as CT scans for all lung details.
