Nose cells could fix your knee: new implant trial launches
NCT ID NCT06163573
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase II trial tests whether an implant made from a patient's own nasal cartilage can treat patellofemoral osteoarthritis (knee arthritis) better than standard platelet-rich plasma injections. 75 adults aged 18–65 with moderate knee arthritis will be randomly assigned to receive either the implant or injections. The main goal is to see if the implant improves knee pain and function over 24 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- nasal cartilage implant (autologous nasal chondrocyte tissue-engineered cartilage graft)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a new, longer-lasting treatment option for knee osteoarthritis that uses the patient's own nasal cells to repair damaged cartilage.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early phase II trial with only 75 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The implant requires surgery, and there is a risk of side effects or the graft not working as hoped.
