Could a Tooth-Friendly coating on clear aligners stop white spots before they start?
NCT ID NCT07715552
First seen Jul 20, 2026 · Last updated Jul 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether coating clear orthodontic aligners with nano chitosan—a natural antimicrobial—can reduce white spot lesions (early enamel damage) that sometimes develop during aligner therapy. About 53 people with mild to moderate misalignment will wear either coated or uncoated aligners. Researchers will measure changes in enamel mineral loss using a special fluorescence imaging system.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a nano chitosan coating applied to clear orthodontic aligners
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this coating could help prevent enamel damage during clear aligner therapy, reducing the need for additional dental treatments.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 53 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The coating's long-term durability and safety are not yet established.
