New VA program aims to catch silent liver disease in veterans
NCT ID NCT06671886
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests a new care pathway for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in VA primary care. The pathway automatically identifies at-risk patients and educates providers. Researchers will compare this approach to usual care in 32 primary care teams to see if it increases diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
NAFLD Clinical Care Pathway (e-trigger and provider education)
What this could lead to
If successful, this pathway could help more Veterans get diagnosed and treated for NAFLD, potentially preventing serious liver disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 32 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is behavioral, not a drug, so impact may be limited.
