Can a sugar test reveal how fatty liver begins in obese adolescents?
NCT ID NCT04634643
First seen Jul 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study aims to uncover the biological processes that lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese teenagers. Researchers will measure how the body produces lactate during a sugar-drink test, using a mathematical model to track metabolic changes. Participants are 12 to 18 years old, in good general health, and not taking chronic medications. The goal is to better understand why fat builds up in the liver, which could guide future prevention or treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the mechanisms behind fatty liver in obese teens are identified, it could point toward targeted prevention or treatment strategies.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly test any therapy. The findings may not apply to all youth with NAFLD.
