Repeated Skin-Release procedure may smooth old acne scars

NCT ID NCT02216864

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests whether performing multiple subcision procedures over several visits can improve rolling acne scars. Rolling scars are depressed areas of skin caused by past acne. Subcision involves inserting a small blade under the skin to break up fibrous bands that tether the scar down. The study compares treated versus untreated sides of the face in adults aged 18 to 65 with bilateral rolling scars and no active acne.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

multiple subcision procedure

What this could lead to

If effective, this approach could offer a way to improve the appearance of rolling acne scars without drugs or lasers.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 5 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The procedure involves cutting under the skin and carries risks like bruising, infection, or uneven results.
