Could a simple muscle injection beat standard knee shots for arthritis pain?

NCT ID NCT07347028

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether injecting a steroid and numbing medicine into muscle trigger points can relieve knee osteoarthritis pain as well as injecting into the knee joint itself. About 1,000 adults with knee arthritis and at least one tender muscle spot will receive either a trigger point injection or a joint injection. Researchers will track pain and function for two years to see if the simpler muscle injection works just as well.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

triamcinolone acetonide (a corticosteroid) mixed with lidocaine (a numbing agent)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simpler, safer injection option for knee osteoarthritis pain that is easier to perform than joint injections.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage, non-inferiority trial, so it may show the trigger point injection is no better than a placebo or not as good as the standard joint injection. The study is also limited to people with knee osteoarthritis and trigger points.
