Could a simple pill help ICU patients get off IV blood pressure drugs faster?
NCT ID NCT05058612
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether midodrine, an oral medication that raises blood pressure, can help intensive care unit (ICU) patients stop needing intravenous (IV) vasopressors sooner. About 870 adults with dangerously low blood pressure who are already improving will receive either midodrine or a placebo. The goal is to see if midodrine reduces deaths and shortens ICU stays.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Midodrine (an oral blood-pressure-raising medication)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help ICU patients get off IV blood-pressure drugs faster, potentially shortening their stay.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial, but midodrine is not yet proven for this use. It may not reduce ICU stays or mortality, and side effects like high blood pressure or slow heart rate are possible.
