Chemo's hidden toll on blood vessels revealed
NCT ID NCT04042298
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study measured blood flow in the skin of 62 people, including cancer patients who received 5-FU chemotherapy, those on other treatments, cancer survivors, and healthy controls. Researchers used a non-invasive laser sensor to see how small blood vessels responded to substances that widen or narrow them. The goal was to understand why 5-FU can cause heart problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help explain how 5-FU chemotherapy affects blood vessels, potentially leading to better monitoring or prevention of heart-related side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed observational study that only measures blood flow at one time point. It does not test any treatment, so it cannot directly improve patient care.
