16-Year study: does your Body's fuel flexibility predict future health?

NCT ID NCT06340321

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether the body's ability to switch between burning fat and sugar (called metabolic flexibility) is linked to changes in metabolic health over 16 years. Researchers will re-examine 18 people who had their metabolic flexibility measured in 2008-2009. They will check weight, blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure to see if those with better flexibility stayed healthier.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help clarify whether poor metabolic flexibility is a cause or a result of metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational follow-up study with only 18 participants. It cannot prove cause and effect, and results may not apply to the general population.
