Root canal timing may influence pain and sleep, study suggests

NCT ID NCT07173699

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how the body's natural melatonin levels affect pain and sleep quality after root canal treatment. Forty-five adults will each get two root canals—one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Researchers will measure melatonin in saliva before each treatment and ask participants about their pain and sleep afterward. The goal is to see if treatment timing makes a difference.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help dentists schedule root canals at the best time of day to reduce pain and improve sleep afterward.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study with only 45 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and it does not test a new treatment.
