Diamonds and sperm: a new way to detect fertility problems?
NCT ID NCT05514223
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a new technique called diamond magnetometry to measure free radicals in individual sperm cells and blood. Free radicals are natural but can damage sperm if out of balance. Researchers will also look at the bacteria in semen and how lifestyle and diet affect free radical levels. The goal is to better understand what causes male infertility and possibly find new ways to diagnose it.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a new way to diagnose male infertility by measuring free radicals in sperm, and may help identify lifestyle factors that affect fertility.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to all men. The new measurement technique is still experimental and may not prove useful in practice.
