New dialysis filter aims to cut inflammation and protect hearts in kidney patients
NCT ID NCT07679763
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a newer type of dialysis filter (medium cut-off membrane) can reduce inflammation and improve heart function better than the standard filter in people with end-stage kidney disease. Thirty adults on maintenance hemodialysis will use each filter for three months in a crossover design. Researchers will measure blood markers of inflammation and blood vessel health, along with artery stiffness, muscle strength, and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Medium cut-off (MCO) hemodialysis membrane (ELISIO™ MCO series)
What this could lead to
If MCO membranes prove better, this could lead to improved inflammation control and heart health for people on long-term dialysis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage crossover study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is a device, not a drug, so benefits may be modest.
