Jaw pain headaches? Hands-On therapy and Brain-Body exercises show promise

NCT ID NCT05927545

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether manual therapy (hands-on treatment) and a cognitive exercise therapy approach (BETY) can reduce headache pain and improve quality of life in people with temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-related headaches. 60 adults with TMD headaches were split into groups receiving either education and exercises alone, or combined with manual therapy or BETY. The goal was to see if these treatments help with pain, jaw function, sleep, and mood over 8 weeks and 5 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Manual therapy and cognitive exercise therapy (BETY) approach
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward effective non-drug treatments for headaches caused by jaw joint problems, improving pain and daily function.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments are physical therapies, not a cure, and benefits may vary.
