AI alerts in medical records aim to curb opioid overdoses
NCT ID NCT06806163
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether showing doctors a warning flag in electronic health records for patients at high risk of opioid overdose can lead to safer prescribing. About 1,350 adults who recently received an opioid prescription will be included. Doctors in some clinics will see a simple flag, while others will also get extra reminders (nudges) to prescribe naloxone or avoid risky combinations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
EHR-embedded risk flag and behavioral nudges
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a simple, data-driven tool to reduce opioid overdose risk through safer prescribing.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral intervention, not a drug. Its impact depends on how clinicians respond, and it may not reduce actual overdose rates.
